Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation with Implant or Autologous Fat Transfer

A woman's feminity and body image derive tremendously from the proportions of her breast. It is natural to associate a good volume, perky breast with youth and the converse with aging.
Small breasts could be a developmental issue or can result from deflation secondary to weight loss, breastfeeding or aging and menopause. Some women might have asymmetry breast sizes that they want to correct.
A breast enlargement procedure with a breast implant or Autologous Fat Transfer AFT is designed to add volume and to an extent lift the breast up, so that the woman gets a perkier breast that is proportionate to her chest dimensions.

Breast Implants come in either round or anatomic (teardrop) shapes and are a proven safe way of enhancing the breast.

Autologous Fat Transfer uses fat taken from areas were it is unwanted and transferring it to the breast to enhance its volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any risks in having breast implants?

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries, presently. Its popularity has to do with the safety profile of the surgery and the excellent results it can offer. Having said that there are reported risks that you have to be aware of. We go to great lengths to explain all the reported risks and complications associated with the procedure through the consultation process and also through all the documentation you will receive prior to your decision to undergo the surgery.

To minimise the risks associated with implants we choose only CE or FDA approved implants in our practice. We are experts in the planning of the size and shape of the implant needed in each patient.

In the list of complications reported, the early ones can be bleeding, infection or general anaesthesia related side effects, these are rare in our patients.

The late complications that can happen are a capsular contraction, rippling implant rupture etc. Please refer to our consent form for a detailed explanation.

Do Breast Implants make you look fake?

It is not necessary to look like a page three model if you are wanting breast implants. Depending on the dimensions of your chest and current breast, and your desire, we can augment the breast to make it as natural as possible while still making it look perky and proportionate on the chest.

Do implants need to be replaced or how long do implants last?

While there is no expiration date on the implants, most patients with well-settled implants can have these devices in place for their whole lives if there are no problems.
If however there is an infection or capsular contraction (both being rare events) then the implant needs to be removed and either replaced or substituted by a fat transfer procedure.
In the rare event that the patient develops a complication like BI ALCL, the implant will have to be removed as a part of the procedure to treat the BI ALCL.

What scar will I have after the surgery?

We prefer the breast fold approach which places the scar neatly into the breast fold. While each patient has a different scar outcome, most will have a nearly imperceptible scar at the end of the scar maturation process, which generally is 1 – 1.5 years.
