Calf Liposuction, Implant
If you have a slender frame, but the legs, calves or ankles are thicker, and out of proportion, there are several non-surgical and surgical techniques of achieving a reduction of the bulk of the calves and making the legs more slender and proportionate to your frame.
The primary non-surgical treatment of bulky claves is Botulinum Toxin injections into the calf muscles if they are bulkier than required and need to be slimmed down. If the increase in girth of the calves or the cankle (the area between the calf and the ankle) is due to fat accumulation, minimally invasive surgical procedures like Liposuction can be used to slim down the legs. Calf implants, on the other hand, will enhance the shape of the calf by giving it a more curvaceous appearance.
Yes, Botulinum Toxin injections can be used to reduce the bulk of the gastrocnemius (calf) muscles, if the bulky calf is because the muscle has hypertrophied or grown large our of proportion to the shape of the calf. These injections are given after analysing the most effective injection points, and the effect generally lasts up to 4 – 6 months before needing a top-up. It is a quick clinic procedure.
Yes, Vaser Liposuction, Laser-assisted Liposuction, Microcanalicular Liposuction, Power-assisted Liposuction are all great methods of slimming down the calves if excess fat deposits are causing the bulkiness.
While most patients will walk on and off the operating table, we would advise all our patients to take rest for 5 – 7 days with their feet up for the most time, to allow for quicker healing of the area and reduction of the swelling. You will also have to wear a pressure garment for a few weeks.
As with any cosmetic surgery, Calf Implants come with the standard risks associated with any cosmetic surgery. The commonest side effects are bruising, swelling and pain. There is a less likely chance that the implant does not settle down in the area it has been placed.
The surgery is generally performed under General Anaesthesia and will involve an overnight stay, with or without drains. Once discharged from the hospital, we recommend you do very little walking for the next 2-3 days and rest a lot with your feet up. You are encouraged to keep moving your feet to aid with the blood circulation. After the first few days, we will ask you to increase the walking gradually. You can realistically expect to start driving at about 2 weeks from surgery if all goes well. The first 2 weeks is the period of maximum discomfort, as the skin adapts to the implant.
Autologous Fat Grafting is an alternative, but has its limitation and might not suit every patient.
